Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace talks with Sarah MacDonald on the Tragic Passing of Sinead O’Connor, Her Legacy and the Power of Mental Health Awareness

This was a conversation I was so thrilled to have.

For the last few days, I was looking for the appropriate outlet with which to speak about the tragic and unexpected passing of the incomparable Sinéad O’Connor. So, when Corey Herscu reached out a few days ago about discussing this very topic with Raine Maida, I was honored to do so.

This conversation is a special one for so many reasons. We talked at length about what it was like for Our Lady Peace to cover her hit “Nothing Compares 2 U,” and what her influence meant to Raine. We also talked about the wonderful legacy Sinead had, about how through everything the world threw at her, she never waivered in her courage and always spoke her truth.

I encourage anyone who reads this to explore Sinead’s amazing backlog of music because it’s out of this world, and so powerful, and as Raine put it, “was so ahead of her time.”

Another point we also talked about was the importance of spreading mental health awareness, and sharing important resources to help those in need of it. The stigma of getting help needs to end. The stigma of taking medication in order to feel normal needs to end.

Please do not be afraid talk to a friend, a family member or someone within your life with whom you can trust.

You are not a burden for doing so. I promise you.

You are not alone. I promise you.

It’s okay to not be okay, but it’s not okay to suffer in silence.
