REVIEW: Chantal Kreviazul Live at The Confederation Center of the Arts

It was an evening of storytelling, laughter and most importantly – great music! Juno Award-winning singer/songwriter, Chantal Kreviazuk graced the stage of the Homburg Theater at Charlottetown’s Confederation Center of the Arts on Wednesday evening to a crowd anxiously awaiting to see her after almost 7 years.

The evening started on a high note with opening artist, Kevin Fox performing on the theater stage. An incredible talent, he walked on stage, picked up his stand up bass and started his set with an incredible cover of the Eurythmics classic, “Sweet Dreams.” From there, he entertained the crowd with humorous real-life stories alongside a showcasing of pure, raw talent featuring songs of his own making like “By and By” and other covers like Paul Simon’s “Diamonds in the Soles of her Shoes.”  Luckily for the Charlottetown crowd, it would not be the last they’d see of Fox.

For the main event of the evening, Fox along with violinist, and Maritime native, Karen Graves joined Chantal Kreviazuk on stage for what was a very intimate set. From the very moment she walked on stage, Kreviazuk showcased her incredible vocal range and legendary musicianship in addition to opening herself up completely to the Charlottetown audience by sharing the deep and personal stories behind her songs, and even giving a glimpse into her own personal life through private photos that played in a slideshow while performing songs like, “I Love You”, “I Will Be” and “Snowing in the Desert,” all three of which are featured on her latest album, “Hard Sail.”  She also performed some fan favorites during her set that included, “All I Can Do”, “Feels Like Home,” and a personal favorite – “Surrounded” which was performed during her encore.

Chantal concluded her tour of the Maritimes this passed Thursday in Moncton before heading back home for a few days. However, she and Fox will be returning to Canada with one more show at Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall on December 1st.  Trust me when I say if the Charlottetown show was any indication, it will be a show not to be missed!
